Shake all of the ingredients with ice.

Strain into a chilled glass and garnish.

This recipe, adapted from Hugo R. Ensslin’s 1917 book Recipes for Mixed Drinks, is one of numerous variations that have existed since pre-Prohibition times. The proportions here are adapted to better suit modern tastes.
